The reduction in microbial load (or bioburden) by chemical means. The reduction of contamination, usually achieved through cleaning as a preparation step, followed by using chemicals, biocides, and disinfectants as sanitizing agents. Sanitation does not guarantee the complete absence of microorganisms.
