In your Budtender Certification, you will learn when operating a scale you want to check it every day a make sure it is calculated. You can put a nickel on it and make sure it weighs 0.5 grams, if your scale is incorrect you can reset it according to how your scale operates and reprogram the device.
If your scale is off then you will be short or you could lose a patient. Many times it is recommended for dispensaries to always weigh 1/8ths (of an ounce) at 3.7 grams instead of 3.5 grams and that will keep your patients always coming to your dispensary as well as ensure you’re never shorting anyone.
You can make sure you add this weight when you complete the transactions in your P.O.S. computer system so your inventory matches your accounting records.

Air gusts, even small ones, which push the scale up or down.
- Settling airborne dust contributes to weight.
- Mis-calibration over time, due to drift in the circuit’s accuracy or temperature change.
- Magnetic fields or electrostatic fields.
- Condensation of atmospheric water on cold items.
- Evaporation of water from wet items.
- Vibration or seismic disturbances.
Weighting medical marijuana is a bit of a science. The first time you do it is the hardest, but once you figure out the little tricks to your scale you can be weighing medicine like a pro.
Steps To Weighing Medical Marijuana
Step 1 – Determine How And Which Scale To Use
There are several different scales that dispensaries will use and they come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Make sure the scale you use weighs in the increments and units you want. Most digital scales weigh things in grams, ounces, and maybe other units.
Step 2 – How Much To Weight
Decide how you’re going to weigh the medicine.
Ounce Measurement Chart
-> 1 Gram = 0.03 Ounce
-> 3.5 Grams = 1/8 Ounce
-> 7 Grams = 1/4 Ounce
-> 14 Grams = 1/2 Ounce
-> 21 Grams = 3/4 Ounce
-> 28 Grams = 1 Ounce
-> 4 Ounces = 1/4 Pound
-> 16 Ounces = 1 Pound
With this step, you have a few options: directly on the scale, in a baggie, or some other container. Weighting the medicine directly on the scale is a good option if all you have is a solid bud or not very much of it. Using a baggie to weigh your medicine is often not a very good idea.
The extra air in the baggie will throw off your measurements and baggies have to weigh themselves, but getting that weight is hard to do so it can be throwing off your measurements. It typically is preferred to use a plastic container that will fit on the scale.
Step 3 – Start Weight The Product
Now that you’ve decided how you’re going to weigh it, turn the scale on and let it zero out. For some scales, you may have to calibrate and most digital scales have at least a calibration option, to test your scale to make sure it is weighing things correctly you can put a nickel on it. Nickels weigh almost exactly five (5) grams, so if you get about 5 grams off your scale then it is good to go.
Step 4 – Remember Container Weight Or “Tare” Button
Put your empty plastic container on the scale first. Remembering the weight of your plastic container will certainly help, but you can also hit the “tare button” which will zero out the scale again with your plastic container weight on it.
Step 5 – Package Medicine After Weighting
Pull up your container with all of the patient’s medicine.
Step 6 – Provide Cannabis Medicine
Take the reading then transfer the medicine to a container for a patient.
That’s it. It isn’t hard to weigh medicine, but it is irritating unless you know the right tricks to get it done without any trouble.
